Bimetallic thermometers are designed and manufactured based on the principle of solid thermal expansion. Usually, two metal plates with relatively large differences in expansion coefficients are stacked and welded together to form a bimetallic temperature sensing element. When the temperature changes, different expansion and contraction occur due to the relatively large difference in the coefficient of linear expansion between the two different materials of the bimetallic sheet, resulting in bending deformation of the bimetallic sheet. According to different deformations, different amounts of rotation are generated. The amount of rotation drives the connected shaft, which in turn drives the indicator needle at the other end. This way, the indicator needle can point to the correct reading and indicate the temperature.
