Asia-pacific metrology organization workshop on gas analytical metrology 2015-08-02

The 12th Asia-Pacific Metrology Planning Organization/Material Quality Technical Committee Gas Analysis Working Group (APMP/TCQM-GAWG) seminar was successfully held in Chengdu, China for four days. The seminar, which is currently in a high-speed development stage and requires products that are compatible with it, brought together technicians from different countries and regions to exchange and cooperate with each other. They aimed to learn from each other's strengths and weaknesses in technology, constantly innovate, and strive to achieve higher levels of measurement standards, more accurate measurement techniques, and wider international equivalence.

The seminar was hosted by the Institute of New Energy and Environment of the China Institute of Metrology. The theme of the seminar was gas metering in the fields of environment, energy, health, and industry. Specific topics included: future development of gas metering; New demand for gas standard substances used in the fields of environment, energy, health, and industry; New methods for gas analysis in the fields of environment, energy, health, and industry, as well as traceability and quality assurance of gas measurement. More than 40 researchers from metrology and testing institutions in countries and regions such as South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan, as well as from some provinces and cities in China, attended the seminar.

Wu Fangdi, Vice President of the China National Institute of Metrology, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the seminar. He emphasized that gas metering has broad application prospects in energy, environment, healthcare, and emerging industries, while the rapid development of these fields also poses higher challenges to metrology technology and measurement capabilities. He proposed encouraging technicians from different countries and regions to strengthen exchanges and cooperation, learn from each other's strengths and weaknesses in technology, constantly innovate, and strive to achieve higher levels of measurement standards, more accurate measurement techniques, and wider international equivalence.

The seminar invited Dr. Jinseog Kim, current chairman of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance - Gas Analysis Working Group (BIPM CCQM-GAWG) Gas Working Group, to deliver a keynote speech. He analyzed in detail the development status of the international gas measurement field in recent years and elaborated on its future development directions and research plans. In addition, the Director of the Gas Department of the National Institute of Metrology (NMIJ) and the Japan Organization for the Evaluation of Chemical Substances (CERI) also gave oral reports on their laboratories' research on greenhouse gas standard substances and other aspects. Eight researchers from the Institute of New Energy and Environment of the China Institute of Metrology presented reports on topics such as the establishment of dynamic gas measurement standards, international comparison of greenhouse gas methane measurement, research on Freon gas standard materials, and research on pure gas measurement methods. A total of 27 reports were received at the seminar, including 20 oral reports and 7 poster reports.

The seminar showcased the research achievements of the China National Institute of Metrology in the field of gas metrology to international peers, providing a good platform for strengthening communication and exchange among technical personnel of metrology institutions in the Asia-Pacific region in the field of gas metrology. Through this seminar, domestic researchers also saw the gap between China and developed countries such as Japan and South Korea in certain measurement technology details, keeping up with international research hotspots, and serving industries, which has important reference significance for the future development of China's gas measurement industry.
